Bike fitting: towards the perfect pedaling

“Bike Fitting”, does that ring a bell? You are a cyclist or
triathlete, and maybe you recently heard about it. But what is it exactly?
Recuperat-ion helps you familiarize yourself with this concept, which could be
very useful!

Cycling is a sport of repetition. Suppose
you give 90 pedal strokes per minute. After an hour, you will account for 6000 laps! If your bike is not suited to
your body, this repetition can quickly lead to pain, injuries and other damages.
In the best case, you will simply not achieve the optimal performance. Although
the influence of posture on performance and comfort is a fact already well
established and assimilated into the world of athletics, lovers of cycling are left
behind.

The “bike fitting” means: the fit between the cyclist and his bike.
Apart from injuries, this process helps improve the performance of the cyclist
by optimizing the pedaling based on measurements and calculations. Despite the
existence of different schools and especially different measuring tools, the
protocol is generally based on two actions: observation then correction. Logically,
the height of the handlebar, the seat and the seatpost are the easiest elements
to adjust according to the recommended changes. But the cyclist’s anatomical
study also leads to adjust the pedals, sometimes even with the use of shoes soles
for better support. But one thing is certain; it will always be the bike that can
be adapted to the cyclist’s characteristics and not the other way around (it is
worthless to fight if you do not feel comfortable on your bike)
In short, going to a bike fitting workshop is not a whim reserved for
the elite (nowadays all the UCI Pro Tour teams have systematically used this
method to prepare the bikes of each rider). Just like sports nutrition, it can
primarily improve the experience of the cyclist regardless of his/her level.
Finally, it is highly advisable to consult a bike fitting specialist before
buying a new bike, in order to determine exactly what type of bike is best for
you.
