How Staying Hydrated Will Help You Through Allergy Season

Seasonal allergies are a serious problem for millions of people around the world. Sneezing, a runny nose and watery eyes are all unavoidable symptoms in the spring, summer and sometimes the fall. Severe allergies will actually cause skin irritation, rashes and respiratory problems. Common mediations that are designed to relieve these symptoms often have side effects that make it impractical to take the drugs during work hours. One simple way to help reduce the symptoms of allergies or eliminate some minor attacks altogether is to remain hydrated throughout the season.

Improve Natural Defenses

Typical allergens such as pollen, dust and mold spores must pass through physical barriers before entering the body and causing a serious reaction. These natural defenses include the moisture in the eyes, nose and mouth. Maintaining these natural defenses requires proper hydration every day during the allergy season. Drinking water regularly over the course of an entire day will give the body the moisture and compounds that are necessary to keep these barriers in place so that allergens cannot easily enter the system.

Lower Histamine Production

Dehydration can occur even if a person feels no immediate ill effects. One of the natural responses that the body has when dehydration starts is to release histamines into the blood. Histamines are designed to lock into special receptors that will cause the traditional symptoms of allergies. This behavior helps to preserve the moisture that is already in the body by triggering other chemical processes. Histamines are also released defensively when allergens are encountered. Sneezing and coughing forces the allergens to leave the body. The best way to help lower histamine production during allergy season is to remain well hydrated when conditions are the worst.

Regulate Normal Functions

Proper hydration is essential for a good metabolism, for digestion and for many other processes inside of the body. Dehydration starts to cause imbalances. One side effect of even minor dehydration is the production of cortisol that suppresses the proper functioning of the immune system. This lowers the ability of the body to isolate and remove allergens. Drinking water regularly will stop excessive cortisol production allowing the immune system to work at full strength.

Reduce Severe Episodes

Remaining hydrated during allergy season has the potential to reduce the severity of allergic reactions and attacks. The histamines and cortisol that are produced when a body lacks enough water will combine with the histamines released in response to an allergen. The result is a very severe allergy attack that seems to last for a long time. Staying hydrated will moderate histamine levels so that symptoms are less severe and last for a shorter time.
