Sports is Health. Why you sould visit a sports doctor?

We met  MD Juan García Nieto, sports doctor in the prestigious Teknon Medical Centre in Barcelona, in order he explained us why it’s so important for athletes to do a medical checkup. After several years, this recognized specialist recommends Recuperat-ion Hydrasport to their patients, to improve their health and their performance.



–      Could you tell us what
your work involves?
I am a specialist in sports medicine.
We Sports Medicine specialists are like “General Practitioners for Athletes”. We
help both professional and amateur athletes to deal with any need that arises: the
treatment of injuries, sports performance monitoring, the conducting of stress
tests to ensure that the heart is adapting well to physical stress.  We advise
athletes on nutrition and hydration.  In short, we try to provide solutions
for everything related to sports and physical exercise.
What is the purpose of
a sports test?
An sports test has two clear aims. The first is
to see that the heart is responding well to the physical stress we subject it
to, and to make sure there are no underlying pathologies that might contraindicate
the most strenuous types of sports and exercise or which might require some
kind of therapy. The second aim would be to see how the heart adapts to the
stress test and, through expired gas analysis, study athletes’ performance and help
them to get the most out of their training sessions.
What sort of athlete
would find this type of test worthwhile?
Any athlete. Anyone who does a minimum of
exercise should undergo a sports test to check that he or she does not have any
cardiac alternations. We would also advise athletes who monitor their
performance or compete to undergo gas stress testing…
It’s important to remember that we are really
talking about a Sports Medicine Check-up, in which the sports test plays a key
role along with many other tests, such as the study of body composition, the locomotive
system, spirometry, electrocardiogram and echocardiogram performed at rest…

When did you start
using Recuperat-ion Hydrasport in your practice?
Hydration is a fundamental part of an athlete’s
care and so it is basic to have products like Recuperat-ion Hydrasport which

exercise or play sports over prolonged periods or in extreme environments.

Sports and physical exercise are clearly on the
up and up; and we’re seeing more and more people engaging in pleasure sports
and taking out gym memberships. This is very good because regular physical
exercise means a clear benefit to the athlete’s health and that’s where our
interest and objective lie. However in recent years there has been a
particularly noticeable increase in the number of athletes who have taken the leap
and are participating in increasingly extreme competitions… we begin with
 10 km, then move up to a half or full marathon and even eventually an
Ironman or a Titan Desert… This is a new athlete profile…

       What are the most
frequent pathologies and injuries in athletes?
Muscle, tendon or bone and fatigue owing to the
tough training these sports require. Professional advice is essential to
preventing these injuries that so often cut short a period of preparation. Everything
needs to be monitored; the heart, training, diet, hydration, footwear, hours of
recovery, of sleep…
Could you explain to us
how good hydration helps limit the risk of injuries?
It’s right at the core. As I explained when
answering the previous question: all factors have to be monitored. If we
don’t properly replenish the water and the electrolytes lost while doing
physical exercise, our recovery will be slower and injuries – particularly
muscular ones – will be more frequent… And not just anything will do. We should
hydrate ourselves not by drinking water but rather a scientifically proven
drink that helps us to replenish both water and electrolytes quickly and
